Summer Bodies Are Made In The Winter

summerbodiessqI have spent many summers wishing that I looked better in my swimming suit. Often April or May would roll around and I would think, “I better hurry and get my body ready for this summer!” Mid May would roll around and I would be trying to figure out how to lose 20 pounds or more in two weeks. Newsflash! Summer bodies are made in the winter! For most people it will take more than a few weeks to get their bodies in the shape they want to be in for the summer.

The only safe way to lose weight unless you are under the direction of a doctor is about 1-2 pounds a week. The nice thing about losing weight at this rate is that small changes in your eating habits and activity level can achieve this. I have often been caught in the trap of thinking that I really need to lose more than this amount to be where I want to be. I would go on strict eating plans and tell myself that all of my favorite foods where off limits. Sometimes, it would work for a little while; I would lose weight fairly quickly and feel deprived the whole time until I finally caved in to my favorite foods. Other times, I wouldn’t lose weight as quickly as I wanted to and I would just give up. After one of these occasions I looked back and realized if I had just made smaller changes and started in January or February I would have been much closer to or at my goal weight by early summer. Orange Julius

I’m a Stress Eater

I’m a stress eater!  I’m the mother of nine children.  Three of them were adopted out of foster care and have had some real challenges.  Yes, at times my life is extremely stressful.  Not a great combination for a stress eater.   If you were to look at pictures of me over the last 15 years you would be able to see how much stress was in my life by how overweight I was.  The only problem is you will not find any pictures of me at my highest weights.   If you do they are of me in the background unaware that a picture was being taken.  I hid from the cameras.

When I have a really bad day, I think I deserve a treat.  I need a treat.  A treat will make me feel better.  The problem is once I eat that treat I do not feel better.  I only feel worse about myself.   I overeat then I begin to beat myself up inside.  What a vicious cycle.  I abuse my body and then I abuse myself.    This cycle only adds to my stress.

As a mother of a large family, I also do not do a very good job of taking time to take care of myself.  I make sure my family gets breakfast and lunch but, feeding myself these meals is often an afterthought.  I certainly don’t usually take the time to make sure I am eating healthy low calorie meals that will help me control my weight.  We eat dinner together so that is not usually a problem. What Works For Me

Get Your Greens Smoothie!

I hate spinach!  There, I said it.  The first time I tasted spinach as a little girl I gagged!  That being said, I know it is good for me.  I know I should learn to like it.  I can eat it occasionally in some salads that are covered with a sweet poppy seed dressing and covered in candied nuts.  But, that kind of defeats the purpose of eating the healthy salad doesn’t it?

I have found a great way to make myself eat my greens!  I have to hide it with a bunch of strawberries in a My Support Shake Smoothie.   I actually add a power greens blend that I buy from Costco.  It also includes kale and chard (no I do not like kale or chard any more than I like spinach).  I was going to put up a picture of a green smoothie but frankly, mine is more pink than green.
